Bite-size talk: 1.40pm to 2pm, Saturday 31 August 2019
Location: Surrey Life Bite-size Talks Tent, Gloucester Square
Talk title: A life less plastic
Summary: How to make easy household switches to reduce your daily use of plastic. Victoria and Mel Hemmings (founder of Bare + Fair) will cover some of the current statistics on plastic use and its impact on the planet.
Being a busy mum of two young children, Victoria saw first-hand how much waste, in particular plastic waste, is created on a daily basis. To 'do her bit' for the planet, she started making small changes by reducing the amount of plastic used in her household, including using reusable nappies and wipes and eco friendly cleaning products.
Victoria then turned her attention to the food items that she regularly purchased. Could she buy many of the everyday staples, such as rice, tea and breakfast cereals, without copious amounts of plastic packaging? The answer was not easily nor widely.
Following further research into 'plastic free shopping', she found no local options. However, her findings did discover more and more 'zero waste' shops popping up around the country, offering plastic free, sustainable and responsible shopping to their customers.
Cue the launch of Refill & Refuel, founded March 2019. Victoria currently sells zero waste products from a pop up stall in Woking Market.
Refill & Refuel is a zero waste, plastic free shop which stocks a range of food products including rices, nuts, dried fruit, specialty teas, vegan chocolate and much more. All products are sourced from reputable and sustainable suppliers, and are sold by weight allowing the customer to buy as much or as little as they need. She also stocks a range of plastic free household items such as beeswax wraps and organic cotton produce bags.
Our hope is to secure a permanent premises where we can provide many more plastic free options to our customers.
