Fairtrade Food and Family Quarter

This year’s Woking Food and Drink Festival has been further extended to incorporate a free, family-friendly Fairtrade Food and Family Quarter to be hosted dually at The Lightbox and WWF-UK’s the Living Planet Centre.

Both venues are easily accessible from the town by the main pedestrian crossing on Victoria Way – next to the Basingstoke Canal and linked by the new Bedser Bridge – and are few minutes walk from the heart of the Woking Food and Drink Festival, held in Jubilee Square and adjacent areas.

Within the Quarter, The Lightbox and WWF-UK will be promoting organic, local and Fairtrade food, along with hosting free interactive activities for families. The festival’s free children’s cookery workshops will also be hosted at The Lightbox.

What’s on at the Living Planet Centre?

On Saturday 6 September, the Living Planet Centre will be taken over with exhibitions and hands-on family activities exploring healthy, sustainable living, which not only is good for our health, but looks after the planet too.

With stalls including WWF-UK’s LiveWell team and Woking Fairtrade, visitors to the Living Planet Centre can look at where our food comes from, what we should eat more of, and how we can limit food waste. There will also be a short film with hints and tips to inspire us to make new choices.

The Living Planet Centre’s Learning Zone will host some fantastic family workshops, which will give children a chance to get creative whilst also learning about healthy food.

The WWF-UK workshops are suitable for children aged 4 and over. To sign up to take part, visit and register at www.wwf.org.uk/visitus

The Living Planet Centre opening hours

Especially for the Festival, the Living Planet Centre will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 6 September.

Our interactive exhibition the WWF Experience is open during normal hours Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm for visitors to learn more about WWF’s work and the wonders of the natural world. To find out more, and other activities across the year, visit www.wwf.org.uk/visitus

What’s on at The Lightbox?

Just a stone’s throw away from Jubilee Square, and located next to the WWF-UK Living Planet Centre, The Lightbox will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fairtrade mark by hosting a variety of stalls selling tasty Fairtrade, local and organic treats in its lovely canal-side courtyard. Stallholders will include Seasons Deli from St Johns, along with Traidcraft who specialise in Fairtrade food.

Visitors can also venture into The Lightbox for more Festival treats and activities for both adults and children alike, including free children’s cookery workshops and art exhibitions.

Children’s cookery workshops

This year’s free and exciting children’s cookery workshops, hosted in The Lightbox Education Studio located on the first floor of the venue, offer children the chance to really get excited about food and cooking! Children of all ages have the opportunity to experiment, play and learn.
